K4AMG Mission Statement:

To bring young people together with electronics
and wireless communications using Amateur Radio.

Why "The Mars Generation"?

Amateur Radio is more than just a hobby.  Amateur Radio is a hobby rooted deep in the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).  Our club has the philosophy that Amateur Radio can be used as a learning tool to encourage the youth in our community to investigate and explore these disciplines with the hope that they will one day pursue them as their chosen careers.  But what does that got to do with The Mars Generation?
For years our club has had a close working relationship with Carole Perry, WB2MGP.  Carole has conducted a youth forum at the Dayton Hamvention for the past 30 years.  Our club was particularly intrigued by one of the presenters at this year’s forum.  Tamitha Skov’s presentation referred to the youth as “The Mars Generation” and with that our club kicked off our new theme.
NASA has a continuous need for people trained in the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics to fulfill their missions and in particular their mission to Mars.  As the club works with our youth we point out NASA’s mission need to reach Mars in the coming decades and the opportunities this presents for them.  We stress that it is they who will fill these needs and thus they are “The Mars Generation”.
Can an Amateur Radio hobby be the trigger for our youth to expand their knowledge in the STEM disciplines?  Watch the short video we produced for the Youth Forum at the Virginia Beach HamFest and then "Ask Us".
